VPN questions, answered

Is it legal to use a VPN in Ireland?

Yes — using a VPN is completely legal in Ireland. It only becomes a problem if you use it for something that’s already illegal, such as piracy. Our full guide covers exactly where you stand.

Do I actually need a VPN?

It depends what you want. A VPN is genuinely useful for privacy on public Wi-Fi, keeping your browsing private from your ISP, and watching services you already pay for — like RTÉ Player or Netflix — when you’re travelling.

Which VPN is fastest in Ireland?

NordVPN was the fastest in our 2026 tests on real Irish connections, holding most of the line speed on WireGuard. Speed varies by line and server, so our ranking weighs it alongside privacy, streaming and value.

Will a VPN slow my connection down?

A little — encryption always costs some speed. The best providers on modern protocols keep almost all of it, so you’re unlikely to notice it for streaming, browsing or downloads.

Free or paid — which should I choose?

Most free VPNs come with tight data caps or weak privacy. If you want a genuinely free option, Proton VPN’s free tier is the honest choice; otherwise a reputable paid VPN is faster, safer and better value overall.

How do you decide the rankings?

We buy every subscription at full price and test each VPN ourselves on real Irish lines, scoring speed, privacy, streaming and value against the same benchmarks. No provider can pay for a better position.

What is the best broadband in Ireland right now?

In August 2026 Vodafone tops our fibre ranking: €25 for six months then a €40 standing price on 500 Mb, with no month-13 jump. Pure Telecom is the fairest contract (no April rise) and Sky is the cheapest first year at €30 — but lands on €67.50. Availability is always by Eircode, so check the networks at your address first.

Which mobile plan is the cheapest unlimited in Ireland?

48, Clear and GoMo all sell unlimited 5G for €12.99 a month with no contract. 48 has no activation fee and Clear’s €12.99 fee is cancelled by a free first month, so both cost €155.88 in year one; GoMo is €168.87. Pick by the radio that works at your house — 48 is Three, Clear is Vodafone, GoMo is Eir.

Do Irish broadband and mobile prices go up every April?

Most of the big names do: Eir adds a flat €4 on fibre from 2027, Vodafone €3.50 on broadband and €2.50 on SIM-only, Three €2.50 to €3 on mobile. Pure Telecom, Digiweb and Imagine have no built-in rise on broadband; 48, GoMo, Sky, Virgin and An Post have none on mobile. Our price-rise trackers list every provider.
